Concrete Arts was proud to assist and sponsor the U of M
with their 2003 Concrete Canoe Competition.
After a year long hiatus, The University of Minnesota ASCE student chapter rejoined the ASCE/MBT
National Concrete Canoe Competition. Twenty-four students became Team Echo last September when
Ross Jentink, Eric Esparza and Jesse Farrell decide that they would rebuild the team. Each and every
member of Team Echo was a first-year participant. In order to create a competitive team, they contacted
Team Koukan co-captains Jesse Struve and Jason Rysavy for advice. Team Koukan (TK), was a successful
concrete canoe team from 2001 that finished sixth at the National competition. Team Echo spent time
designing and testing various concrete mixes. |
Concrete Arts of Hudson, WI
helped the team considerably by teaching
them concrete coloring and acid-
staining processes. The Regional competitions
were held at Lake MacBride in Iowa City.
Team Echo took third overall, and in nearly
every category including design report, oral
presentation, aesthetics and racing.
The other teams were happy to
see that the U of M had rejoined

the competion and were surprised
that this young team did so well.
